History
The YMCA of Southern Indiana is a charitable non-profit community service organization and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. It is run locally, but is affiliated with the YMCA of the USA. The YMCA of the USA provides consultation services, and represents the local Ys on national issues. Locally, the YMCA is a member agency of the Metro United Way.

The YMCA of Southern Indiana was established in 1969 as a branch of the YMCA of Greater Louisville. The YMCA operated for six years using local churches and schools for program activities. It was called the Clark County Family YMCA.

The current building at 4812 Hamburg Pike was dedicated in 1976. The YMCA then changed its name to the Graves Center YMCA. It was named after Clifford and Wilma Graves who donated the property for the building.

In 1986 the YMCA separated from the YMCA of Greater Louisville and formed an independent YMCA. To reflect the regional impact of the YMCA and its service to Clark and Floyd Counties, the agency incorporated as the YMCA of Southern Indiana.

Over the years, the YMCA of Southern Indiana acquired Camp Honor Bright, a former Girl Scout Camp, in Sellersburg and expanded the original facility twice. In 1996 a $1 million expansion added a fitness/wellness center, a Kids Adventure Room and Group Exercise Classroom. A second expansion of $4.8 million, completed in 2005, added another 30,000 square feet. The highlight of this expansion was the addition of three indoor pools: a family fun pool, a lap/instructional pool, and a warm water therapy pool.

In 2008, the YMCA of Southern Indiana opened the Floyd County branch at 33 State Street to better serve both Clark and Floyd counties. The 82,000 square-foot facility includes a double gymnasium, indoor walking track, XRKade® game room, Rock Wall, teen and family center, wellness center, two group exercise studios and an aquatic center with three indoor pools.

Today the YMCA of Southern Indiana serves more than 22,000 members.

Our Story
As you walk through the doors of the YMCA of Southern Indiana you can feel the positive energy everywhere you turn. It is on the faces of children in our Kids Adventure Room, an adult working out in the Wellness Center, a senior citizen taking part in our Active Older Adult program or a volunteer basketball coach helping a child develop skills and self confidence.

With a state-of-the-art Wellness Center, double gymnasium, steam room and sauna, and three indoor pools, the YMCA literally has something for everyone. We can help you attain your goal for self improvement by offering a variety of programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body.

The programs offered by the YMCA of Southern Indiana range from pre-school, youth and teens to adults, families and senior citizens. We have designed these programs to fulfill the needs of our community. Our membership dues, program fees and fundraising dollars are put back into our facilities, equipment, programs and services to benefit you. This is one way that we are able to keep our members connected with our community.

Our Board of Directors consists of volunteers who, just like you, have an interest in making our Southern Indiana community a better place to live and work.
